History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was first founded by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in modern drilling and oil drilling technology. The first company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group obtained a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling equipment. In the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into a global brand in the succeeding years.
