Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in a different complex or building so as to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a secure enclosure that can just be accessible by authorized employees. It is important for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself needs to be protected. This job can use retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also vital to have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. In addition, anyone who is operating the fueling station should be trained and also has to be trained to use the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators utilizing a lift truck should be properly trained. This training includes a classroom part as well as hands-on training. When the training sessions have been completed, the individual has to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A part of this training also includes the proper method of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also involves site-specific procedures and the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS must be located inside all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals that are used on site. This will also cover the acid in the forklift battery, together with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all employees all the time. If any exposure incident occurs for instance, the person needs to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Normally, if you are not sure if medical care is required, as a general rule; have a medical doctor examine the injury if you really believe it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
